Aaron Greene secured European football for St Patrick's Athletic next season, as they beat Galway United at Eamonn Deacy Park.
The 25-year-old, who began his League of Ireland career with Galway, gave his side the lead in the first half and the hosts couldn't peg them back.
The game had a real end-of-season feel, but St Pat's looked the hungrier side.
Even though they conceded 12 goals in their last four games they kept Galway at bay.
Galway's first shot in anger didn't come until Ryan Connolly shot wide in the 87th minute.
But the EA Sports Cup holders, who won that trophy when they beat Galway on penalties, dominated throughout.
Greene's goal just before the break gave Pat's a 1-0 half-time advantage.
The goal was created by the hard work of Christy Fagan down the wing; he somehow managed to get his cross in before the ball went out of play - and Greene made no mistake with the finish.
The first half was quiet and despite chances for Fagan and Conan Byrne, Pat's couldn't convert their dominance in the possession stakes.
Gary Shanahan did well for Galway down the right and Jake Keegan continued to battle tirelessly but the supply was poor.
And Pat's finished their best chance, with Greene on the end of it in the 46th minute.
Greene should have doubled his tally before the hour, when he blazed a free header wide, and Fagan had another gilt-edged opportunity, that Winn was equal to.
