StPat's retain slim hopes of securing a European place for next season and they all but killed Galway's with this hard-fought win at Richmond Park.

The sole goal came three minutes in. Ryan Connolly gave the ball away and Christy Fagan guided it home with panache for his seventh league goal of the season.

Vinny Faherty headed straight at Brendan Clarke from a brilliant Connolly centre after 25 minutes, while Jamie McGrath almost put the Saints 2-0 up before the break but Conor Winn got down well.

With the wind at their backs, Galway dictated the third quarter. Faherty headed over, Paul Sinnott forced Clarke into a fine stop after excellent work by Alex Byrne and Connolly flashed wide.

Galway nearly stole an equaliser at the death but Sean Hoare made a critical intervention.
