Dundalk pulled in front on the half-hour mark. Substitute Stephen Maher made a break for the UCD byline and his ball across the face of goal was turned in by Fahrudin Kuduzovic.
By that stage the Students could have been three goals to the good but for the class of Lilywhites goalkeeper Peter Cherrie.
Kuduzovic made them pay for their wastefulness in front of goal and the visitors looked comfortable until the stroke of half-time when Garry Breen was shown a straight red card following an innocuous looking aerial duel with Greg Bolger.
The Scot looked commanding throughout and ensured a clean sheet with a wonderful save from Bolger's 74th minute penalty.
Substitute Johnny Breen made sure of the three points for Dundalk late on when he rolled the ball through Billy Brennan's legs.
