Doyle helps Saints avoid slip-up

AN upset never looked likely at Richmond Park after St Patrick's Athletic dealt with this potential banana skin in a workman-like fashion.

There was little complacency to be seen in Pete Mahon's side against their non-league opposition, as they raided with unrelenting purpose throughout the opening 45 minutes.

Belgrove were on the back foot from the off and only a minute in Derek Doyle forced Alan Cosgrave into a terrific save from his spot-kick after the winger had been upended in the box.

James O'Brien and Ryan Guy then had chances to open the scoring during the early stages, but for all their creative endeavour, it was a defensive mistake that allowed the Saints in for the opener.

Cosgrave failed to deal with Karl O'Brien's back pass on 26 minutes and Derek Doyle capitalised with the simplest of finishes.

And right on the stroke of half-time, the home crowd were on their feet again.

Ryan Guy's shot from distance was flapped by Cosgrave and Ian Bermingham stroked the ball home with minimum fuss for the second.

Belgrove never looked like denting the scoreline in a more subdued second period. Vinny Faherty did get a half chance for the home side in the 73rd but his header was weak as it sailed over Cosgrave's crossbar.

St Patrick's Ath -- Rogers, Pender, Guthrie (Lynch 37) , Kenna, Bermingham; Cash (Stewart 69), Byrne, O'Brien, Doyle (North 79); Guy, Faherty.

Belgrove FC -- Cosgrave, Andrews, Duff, Dawson, O'Brien; Kerr (Allen h-t), Cooling (Roe h/t), Whelan, Hickey (O'Connell 69); Dowler, Ryan.
