Gary Shanahan scored a sensational lob but Galway couldn’t hold out at Eamonn Deacy Park as Cork City registered their third draw on the bounce in front of 1,557.
Ryan Connolly crossed wonderfully for Vinny Faherty to head Galway in front after just five minutes. It came from Galway’s first corner when Connolly played it short, and he got the ball back before he provided the inch-perfect cross.
The hosts could have made it 2-0 in the 18th minute but after John Sullivan created an opportunity from nothing, Ruairi Keating’s chance was blocked.
From the subsequent break Stephen Dooley drove upfield and turned Colm Horgan inside out before he finished into the bottom right corner.
If Dooley’s strike was brilliant, Galway’s next goal was superb. Goalkeeper Mark McNulty made a error with his clearance and Shanahan lobbed the retreating keeper from the tightest of angles.
It was 2-1 to Galway at half-time and they controlled the game after half-time as Connolly and Sullivan provided the link between attack and defence, for Galway.
Galway hadn’t conceded at home prior to this game in 2016 but they conceded their second home goal of the campaign in the 68th minute. Eoghan O’Connell went close but his shot was deflected over. The corner was swung in and O’Connell forced Cantwell into an own goal.
