Callan supplies early winner as Rovers claim U-17 honours
Shamrock Rovers 3 St Patrick's Athletic 2
Shamrock Rovers claimed the inaugural SSE Airtricity National U-17 title with a narrow victory over St Patrick’s Athletic in the decider at Tallaght Stadium.
All the goals arrived in an exciting opening half as the home side came from behind twice to take the lead before the interval.
Josh Hogan had St Pat’s in front on three minutes with his second attempt after Rovers ‘keeper Mark Travers had blocked his initial effort.
The Rovers equaliser came seven minutes later when Darren Quinn beat Paul Martin from close in. Within a minute, Pat’s were back in front with John Martin running clear of the Hoops defence to slip the ball past Travers. Shane Stokes levelled again direct from an in-swinging corner kick on 37 minutes.
Rovers then struck with what turned out to be the winner in the closing minutes of the half when Sean Callan appeared to get the final touch on a Richie English free-kick into the St Pat’s box that came off a Pat’s defender.
