Bohs the big winners as Derry Euro appeal fails

BOHEMIANS are in line for a cash windfall after UEFA upheld Derry City's European ban for the coming season.

The Candystripes were suspended from European competition for three seasons after going into liquidation in 2009.

The club had hoped that the complete overhaul they have undergone since would see the ban lifted, but they were informed yesterday that their appeal had been rejected.

Derry have the option of going to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, but chairman Philip O'Doherty said that route might prove too costly. As a result, the Aaron Callaghan's cash-strapped young Gypsies, who finished fourth last season, are in line for an unexpected €110,000 bonus plus the added incentive of European action.

Bohs assistant manager Owen Heary said: "It would be brilliant. To think that before Christmas it was unsure whether Bohs would be able to keep going."

Bohs have added experienced midfielder Dave Mulcahy to their squad, while Dundalk have signed Irish youngsters Michael Rafter, Robert Waters and Dan Cunningham -- twin brother of Ireland international Greg -- as well as English defender Luke Danville.
