Athlone unable to field team

The League of Ireland First Division descended into farce yesterday after Athlone pulled out of their away date with Waterford because they were unable to field a team.
It's understood that a number of players refused to travel because of a dispute with the club over payment issues.
The FAI issued a strongly worded statement lambasting Athlone for pulling out of the fixture so close to kick off.
"We take this matter extremely seriously and will be charging Athlone for failing to fulfil the fixture and for bringing the game into disrepute," said league chief Fran Gavin.
