Bohemians missed the chance to leapfrog Sligo Rovers last night with Ismahil Akinade's early goal not enough against a resilient Galway United at Dalymount.

Bohs could have leapfrogged Sligo following their draw against Bray, but Tribesmen captain Ryan Connolly's first-half strike scuppered the Dublin club's plans.

Bohs' result also ended their winning streak as the league resumed from its mid-season break.

Akinade put the Gypsies ahead in the opening ten minutes when he met Keith Buckley's pinpoint cross to defeat goalkeeper Conor Winn.

Galway tried to return fire immediately but John Sullivan's strike straight into the arms of netminder Dean Delany was easily dealt with.

Powerful

Captain Ryan Connolly then equalised for the Tribesmen with his powerful 30th-minute strike. The league's top goalscorer Vinny Faherty set up Connolly who defeated a stretched Delany to the bottom left-hand corner.

Both sides had failed to fully capitalise on their goalscoring opportunities when entering the dressing room at half-time at 1-1. Stephen Folan netted first for the visitors with a simple tap-in after ten minutes but his efforts were adjudged to be offside by referee Robert Harvey.

Bohemians though had the better chances throughout.

Mark Quigley also failed to make the most of an Akinade cross, firing over the bar minutes after the opener. After the break Bohs again had the better chances, Dave Mulcahy sending a Pender free-kick skyward.
