IRELAND are 90 minutes away from a place in the World Cup quarter-finals -- thanks to Siobhan Killeen's wonder-goal against Canada last night.

Killeen, the scorer last Monday against Brazil, netted with 15 minutes remaining to give a dominant Ireland a deserved victory over the Canadians.

Wearing the white away jersey, the Irish were unchanged from Monday's 2-1 defeat to Brazil.

Killeen and Megan Campbell recovered from minor ankle strains to take their place in Noel King's starting XI and the Irish began strongly in the Larry Gomes Stadium in Arima.

Winger Aileen Gilroy and centre-half Jennifer Byrne linked up well together twice in the early stages from set-pieces -- with the Bealnamulla defender's height clearly causing trouble.

With the early momentum, Ireland continued to dictate the pace of play and they kept the CONCACAF champions penned back for long spells.

However, having defeated the USA in their successful continental championship campaign, the Canadians had plenty of class about them -- particularly in striker Haisha Cantave. She tested Irish 'keeper Grace Moloney on three first-half occasions.

King's side should have opened the scoring early in the second half.

Killeen fired straight at 'keeper Sabrina D'Angelo from the edge of the area. But she made no mistake with 15 minutes to go. The Raheny United ace cut inside and curled an incredible shot inside the top right-hand corner from 20 yards.

King was sent to the stand a few minutes from time for questioning an assistant referee's decision but the Irish held out well.

Ireland now face Ghana in their final group game at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Tobago next Monday, while Canada and Brazil clash in the other Group D game.
