ANDY KEOGH spoiled the party for Wexford as his 77th-minute strike gave Wolves victory on the first visit of a Premier Division side to Ferrycarrig Park last night.
The opening 45 minutes were played in real friendly atmosphere with neither side producing a goal in what was a tame affair. Ireland international Keogh had a 19th-minute effort well held by home 'keeper Packie Holden, while Youths had to wait until the 35th minute for their first attempt on goal, with Jimmy Keohane pulling his low effort wide of the post.
The biggest cheer of the first half was reserved for home full-back Anto Russell, who linked up with Gary Sheehan before firing in a rising shot which brought a fine save out of Marcus Hahnemann. That was as close as it came to breaking the deadlock with the sides going in 0-0 at the break.
Wolves showed more urgency during the opening phases of play on the resumption, taking the lead in the 50th minute when Stefan Maierhofer flicked a low Nenad Milijas cross to the net. Sheehan then came close with a rising shot for the home side.
When Kevin Doyle was introduced in the 65th minute it lifted the crowd but it was Youths who responded and a persistent Sheehan run saw him fire across goal into the far corner of the net one minute later to level the score at 1-1.
However, 13 minutes from the end a Keogh chip sailed over Holden to made it 2-1. It was a goal the striker deserved for his efforts.
Wexford Youths almost snatched an equaliser but Conor Sinnott saw his shot rebound off the crossbar 10 minutes from the final whistle.
