Joey Barton took to Twitter to suggest he was a shoe-in for an award tonight, with his claim receiving the expected level of abuse.
The QPR midfielder is a prolific user of the social media outlet and with more than two million followers has a large captivated audience for his often controversial comments.
Ahead of the gala event in Zurich, the midfielder claimed that he expected to pick up an accolade for Goal of the Year, though injury ruled him out of attending tonight’s ceremony.
“Been sulking all day. Injury has prevented my from going the Balloon Door thing-e-oh tonight. They said I'd pissed it as well,” he tweeted.
“Not sure whether it was my goal from a corner in Europa League or 2 thunderbastards I scored in Champ this season that sealed it for me?”
Naturally the outspoken former England footballer was inundated with abusive tweets for his light-hearted comments, something that was not lost on the former Manchester City man.
“You know what I love about this twitter is all the replies from the divvies that think I genuinely thought I had a chance.”
“They really can make your day sometimes. When your down and it feels like the World has got it in for you. Just thank your lucky stars and be grateful you are not one of those tw*ts. Nothing to say but, I just love you all.”
Barton has tipped Ronaldo to land the top prize, though admits that Franck Ribery is a darkhorse.
