James McCarthy absent as O'Neill names 29-man Irish squad
Martin O'Neill today named a final 29 man squad for Ireland's four summer friendlies, staring with Turkey this weekend.
James McCarthy is the most notable absentee from the squad, while Joey O'Brien and Darren Randolph will also play no part in the friendlies against Turkey, Italy, Costa Rica and Portugal.
“I am looking forward to working with the players over the coming weeks which will be important as we work towards our opening qualification matches in September,” O’Neill said at today's press conference in Waterford City Hall.
“The matches will be about getting to know the players better and changing them around a little bit in terms of personnel in different matches.”
Ireland take on Turkey at the Aviva Staidum on Sunday, May 25 ahead of a clash with Italy at Craven Cottage in London on May 31. The Irish squad then travel to the United States where they meet Costa Rica in Philadelphia on June 6 before finishing with a friendly against Portugal in East Rutherford four days later.
Ireland squad: Forde, Elliot, R Keogh, Wilson, Coleman, O’Shea, Pearce, Kelly, Delaney, Duffy, Hendrick, Clark, Ward, Whelan, Green, McGeady, Pilkington, McClean, Quinn, Meyler, Hoolahan, Keane, Long, D Murphy, Walters, Doyle, Stokes, Cox, Sammon.
