With Ireland's latest European Championship qualifying campaign about to get underway, we decided to ask our writers to choose their greatest Irish football team of the modern era

Using the time frame of the last 40 years, we asked our writers to put together their strongest XI compromising of players that sent Irish supporters to three World Cups and two European Championships to follow the Boys in Green.

Starting tomorrow, we will reveal who our experts chose as their number one, with Packie Bonner and Shay Given the favourites between the posts. Each day we will reveal the make-up of the team with the likes of Paul McGrath, John Giles, Liam Brady, Niall Quinn, Damien Duff and Robbie Keane all vying for positions.

We have taken our overall selection from the choices of our our online and print writers to reveal Ireland's greatest team of the modern era.

On Friday we will then reveal the teams chosen by Dan McDonnell, David Kelly, Vincent Hogan Eamon Sweeney, John Greene and others so you can see if you agree or disagree with their choices.
