He may be playing with a struggling side in the Dutch Erdivisie but Jack Byrne is still doing his best to show Martin O'Neill why he should be brought to this summer's European Championship.

The 19-year-old Dubliner was brought in to train with the national team in the build-up to the Easter friendlies against Switzerland and Slovakia, with the Ireland boss remarking on how confident the Manchester City player is in his own ability.

That self-belief has no doubt increased during his season-long loan with Cambuur, where Byrne has excelled despite playing in a mediocre team.

Last weekend Cambuur took on Dutch heavyweights Ajax and although they were defeated 1-0, Byrne showed real maturity and endeavor on the ball.

He constantly searched for possession in the middle of the field - something we don't always see in Ireland matches - and picked out a beautiful array of passes.

Euro 2016 might still come too soon for Byrne, but if he continues to impress at such a quick rate - and gets any game time in the upcoming warm-up matches - then perhaps O'Neill might take a punt on the youngster.

Watch his highlights from the Ajax fixture for yourself and enjoy the poise that Byrne shows on the ball.
