After taking one paltry point from two World Cup qualifiers, Ireland fans were given something to smile about as pictures surfaced of Seamus Coleman back kicking footballs with Everton.

The Donegal man was back running at the start of August just four months after he underwent surgery on a fractured right tibia and fibula he suffered in a World Cup qualifier against Wales back in March.

But the latest pictures, posted on Everton's official Twitter account, show the Ireland captain striking the ball with that same foot and he is ahead of schedule in the recovery process.

As revealed by Independent.ie, Coleman is 'making good progress' in his recovery but suggestions that he could play for Ireland again in 2017 are 'highly optimistic'.

The sight of the full-back stepping up his training routine has sparked hopes that Coleman could be set for a miraculously speedy recovery, but Independent.ie understands that he is not expected to make a return to the game in the next two months.

Regardless, this is a sight we all want to see.
