Ireland's U-21s began this week's English double-header by losing narrowly to a Conference representative side in Galway.
Noel King's experimental line-up conceded twice midway through the second half, with Sean Maguire's reply eight minutes from time proving a mere consolation.
It shouldn't have been as fellow substitute Pierce Sweeney somehow headed the ball over from under the England crossbar in the final minute.
"It would have been nice to get a draw but this was more about getting a physical test for the players," said King, who will lose his three League of Ireland players for Friday's friendly against Gareth Southgate's Euro-bound charges.
