Shay Given starts as Martin O'Neill names experimental XI

Published 03/09/2014 | 19:05

Martin O'Neill has gone with an experimental side for tonight's international friendly between the Republic of Ireland and Oman at the Aviva Stadium.

It appears as through O'Neill is more keen to get game-time into certain players than go with starting XI that could feature in Tblisi on Sunday.

Three players who made their international debuts against Oman in the 4-1 friendly victory over the Asian side at Craven Cottage in 2012 feature tonight. David Meyler is at right-back, Alex Pearce partners Richard Keogh at centre-back while Robbie Brady starts on the left wing.

After a two-year absence from international football, Shay Given returns to play in goals as expected.

Wes Hoolohan will play behind Kevin Doyle up front who joined Crystal Palace on loan on Monday.

Here are the team lineups:

Republic of Ireland XI: Given, Meyler, Keogh (c), Pearce, Ward, Pilkington, Gibson, Quinn, Brady, Hoolahan, Doyle

Oman XI: Al Habsi, S Al Mukhani, A Al Mukhani, Al Ghailani, Al Owaisi, Al Musalani, Al Muhaijri, Al Farsi, Saleh, Al Siyani, Hardan.
