Robbie Brady reveals hilarious text he received from Robbie Keane before Serbia clash
For the first time in a very long time, Robbie Keane did not occupy the number 10 shirt for the Republic of Ireland.
Fellow Dubliner Robbie Brady donned the shirt last night in Ireland's 2-2 draw with Serbia in Belgrade and was honoured to occupy the jersey worn with such distinction by our record goalscorer.
The Norwich star contacted Keane to let him know that he would be taking his jersey number and the LA Galaxy striker had the perfect response.
“It’s a massive honour,” Brady told reporters after the game. “It just opened up and became available and I fancied it. I want to do well and I wanted to wear it.
"I just sent Robbie a little text and said I’d try not do too much damage to it. He said ‘don’t worry, you only need to score 69 goals.
“But he’s happy I have it and congratulated me on it. I’m hoping to go from strength to strength and put in some more good performances for Ireland.”
Brady began the game in a midfield role but finished it by returning to the left-back berth he occupied for much of the qualifying campaign for Euro 2016.
It was a subdued performance from Brady but he did contribute heavily to both Irish goals.
