Gareth Southgate: I took over a mess at England
Gareth Southgate claims he has inherited a mess after England's uninspiring 0-0 draw in Slovenia last night.
The interim boss has made an unbeaten start to his reign, but the Three Lions were lucky to avoid defeat in Ljubljana.
“I can’t thank the players and support team enough for the backing I have had,” said Southgate.
“We wanted six points, but we have taken over a mess and had to steady the ship. We are on track. I am going to have a couple of days to go and sleep."
The former Middlesborough manager turned to Wayne Rooney as his side searched for a winner, and Southgate once again defended his decision to drop the striker.
“Whatever the outcome of the game, you make a decision on the right rationale that was right at the time,” said Southgate.
“The flow of the game at the moment we brought him on, there was a need for some experience in there to calm things down.
"In terms of the flow of the game with the two defensive midfielders, we needed players of that kind of profile.”
England are currently top of Group F on seven points.
