Coleen Rooney has hit out at the stream of abuse flowing in the direction of her husband Wayne, after it emerged he is set to be dropped from the England side for Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier against Slovenia.

Rooney was booed by a small section of England fans during Saturday’s game against Malta at Wembley, with his latest indifferent display doing little to banish the growing clamour for him to be dropped by his national team manager.

After being left out of the Manchester United line-up by Jose Mourinho last month, Rooney was assured by interim England boss Gareth Southgate that he had a future at international level.

Yet it appears that his days as a first choice starter for his country are over, with Tottenham’s Eric Dier set to return to the England midfield in place of the team’s all-time record goal scorer Rooney.

That inspired a somewhat jubilant reaction from fans delighting in the misery of the fallen star, with Mrs Rooney clearly on the end of some unpleasant Twitter messages as she responded with these tweets. Those messages inspired some predictably heated responses from Rooney’s critics, with Coleen responding to some of them in a feisty manner:
