The tiny Atlantic archipelgao - which boasts a population of just 500,000 - defeated the Portuguese 2-0 at the Estádio António Coimbra da Mota in front of just 3,500 fans.

Cape Verde, who are actually ranked 38th in Fifa's world rankings despite never having come close to qualifying for a World Cup, were two goals up by half-time.

Odaïr Júnior Lopes Fortes gave Cape Verde - once a colony of Portugal - the lead in the 36th minute with a spectacular strike into the top corner.

If that moment stunned the home fans, they were left rubbing their eyes in disbelief when the visitors doubled their advantage through Gegé's close-range finish.

Portugal, who were missing their talisman Cristiano Ronaldo, were unable to mount a second-half fightback and ended the match with 10 men when Andre Pinto was dismissed for a professional foul.
