Injury scare for Walters during training match

THERE was unwelcome drama in Malahide yesterday as Jon Walters was felled by team-mate Shane Long in an intense training match.

Pictures show the Stoke man going down in agony after being clipped by Long and receiving urgent treatment from the medical staff after he was caught around the ankle.

Walters was eventually helped to his feet and struggled to walk to the sideline. But he had improved by the time he walked to the team bus and expressed confidence that he would be fine for Friday's qualifier in Sweden. He is set to start the game on the bench, with Long, ironically, in pole position.

"It was the shock of the studs hitting the nerve more than anything," said goalkeeping coach Alan Kelly. "A bit of ice and he'll be alright. The lads were going at it hammer and tongs – you can see there's a big game coming."

Walters will be assessed by FAI staff before this afternoon's flight. The withdrawal of a striker would open the door for Kevin Doyle, who is top of the standby list.
