The former Liverpool striker Ryan Babel became embroiled in a Twitter scandal late last night, when he responded to a woman asking him about his relationship with Rafa Benitez, his former manager, with the comment “grow some tits instead of speaking about football”.
Babel, who now plays in the United Arab Emirates and was capped by Holland 43 times at full international level, then proceeded to make a series of insulting statements directed at the user, including “at least let your brother or your boyfriend make the comment then we can argue” before adding “Ur a girl…stay in ur lane…”.
The footballer then offered a dubious explanation of his comments, suggesting that whilst "I'm not saying I can't be a football fan as a girl or woman", he was "NOT gonna argue with (women) about football".
The 28 year old forward’s behaviour then became increasingly bizarre, as he appeared to post his personal mobile phone number on the site, before remarking “here is my number if you wanna cuss me out personally”.
Predictably, his comments were heavily criticised by other users, with many telling him that they had unfollowed his account and reported his actions as inappropriate. British sports broadcaster Jacqui Oatley was one of many to quickly condemn his comments.
This is not the first time that Babel has come under fire because of his online behaviour.
In 2011, whilst still a Liverpool player, Babel was fined £10,000 after he posted a photoshopped picture of referee Howard Webb wearing a Manchester United shirt, after his club were beaten at Old Trafford.
