I dare McClean to call me a clown on Twitter – O'Neill

Published 09/02/2013 | 04:00

MARTIN O'NEILL can understand Keiren Westwood's frustration at his lack of game time, but cannot understand why James McClean has returned to Twitter.

And O'Neill is unhappy with Giovanni Trapattoni stating that Westwood must leave Sunderland in order to regain the Ireland goalkeeping jersey.

"While it is unfortunate for Keiren at the moment, he would admit that Simon Mignolet is playing brilliantly for us. An international manager wants all of his players to be playing but it is the prerogative for the club manager to pick who he wants."

McClean's decision to sign back onto the social media website, Twitter, where he caused a storm last year with comments regarding Trapattoni and his ill-advised banter with abusive Northern Ireland fans has annoyed O'Neill.

"Is he maturing? No. He has gone back on Twitter against advice of the club. Do I expect to get a tweet calling me a clown? I wouldn't be surprised. I dare him to do it," he quipped.
