Holders UCD never struck top form but still managed to edge out NUI Maynooth 2-1 to claim a Collingwood Cup quarter-final place at Derry.
Maynooth went in front early on when the referee restarted play with a drop-ball in the box, and Ross Cullinane netted in the ensuing scramble.
UCD had lost goalkeeper Ger Barron through injury in that incident, but they quickly got on top and hit the front with two well-taken goals.
Dave McMillen shot home the equaliser and Sean Houston then put them ahead with a fine individual effort. The Belfield side looked in little danger after that and ran out comfortable winners.
Goalkeeper Eoin Kelly was the hero for UCC, saving twice in the penalty shoot out to oust Mary Immaculate College Limerick after a closely-fought first-round tie.
Josh O'Shea for UCC and Mary I's Donnacha Higgins had netted in the 90 minutes and with no further scoring after extra-time, UCC won shoot-out 4-2.
Micky Gilmore netted twice in NUI Galway's 4-0 win over Surgeons, with Enda Dunne and Dave Shevlin also on target.
John McClure and Stephen Doyle scored for Jordanstown to knock out DCU. Goals from Eamon Black, Paddy Donnelly and Jay Gardiner took Queen's past Coleraine. Chris Lowry replied.
