ASTON Villa manager Paul Lambert is ready to abandon his bid to sign Wes Hoolahan in a move which could leave the Ireland international marooned at Norwich City.

Villa have already had a £1m offer rejected and, having handed in a written transfer request, Hoolahan was hoping that Villa would make an another improved bid.

However, Norwich's reluctance to do business with Villa is threatening to kill off a potential deal and Lambert is now considering switching his attention to other targets.

* Radamel Falcao is in danger of missing the World Cup following confirmation he will need surgery after suffering anterior cruciate ligament damage during Monaco's Coupe de France tie against Monts Or Azergues on Wednesday night.
