Hockley: Ewington in top form for Monkstown
New Zealander Andy Ewington's penalty-corner expertise helped Monkstown regain the Mills Cup at Grange Road.
The muscular Kiwi, back in Ireland in time for the national league campaign, bagged two goals from two attempts as 'Town defeated Three Rock Rovers 4-3 in an absorbing final.
Andy Ward robbed Rovers' defender Ali Haughton to set Monkstown on their way on 21 minutes.
But the eventual winners were in arrears by half-time thanks to Three Rock's Peter Blakeney and Peter McConnell.
When Blakeney extended the advantage three minutes after the resumption, Three Rock appeared set fair to capture a trophy that has eluded them since 1997.
However, Ewington pulled one goal back with lethal power and then Stephen Cole waltzed through the Rovers' defence to equalise in mesmerising style with 20 minutes still left to play.
The deadlock eventually was broken just a couple of minutes from full-time when Ewington sent the ball fizzing home past goalie Stephen West at knee height.
The result gave player-coach Graham Shaw the bragging rights in his duel with former Glenanne team-mate Joe Brennan, who fills the same role for Three Rock.
