Gareth Bale a doubt for El Clasico after injuring ankle on Champions League duty
Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale risks missing El Clasico after suffering an ankle injury while on Champions League duty.
The 27-year-old Wales international hobbled off just before the hour mark in Real's 2-1 victory at Sporting Lisbon and medical tests have subsequently revealed damage to his peroneal tendons.
A statement published on realmadrid.com said Bale's recovery "will continue to be assessed", with the LaLiga derby meeting with Barcelona - scheduled for December 3 - looming large.
The former Tottenham player could also miss the table-topping European showdown with Group F rivals Borussia Dortmund, which comes four days after El Clasico.
Real lead LaLiga by four points from Barca, who have a chance to narrow that gap when they visit Real Sociedad on Sunday. Zinedine Zidane's Blancos host Sporting Gijon at the Bernabeu.
Real coach Zidane said in his post-match press conference in Portugal: "Gareth Bale suffered more of an ankle twist than a knock, but we will have to wait and see what the problem is."
