Champions Sporting Fingal got the fright of their lives at Jackman Park against gallant Limerick last night, before Sean Kelly's missed penalty let the Dubliners off the hook.
Garry O'Neill, Alan Kirby, Ronan Finn and Shaun Williams scored the crucial penalties for Fingal, as Timmy Kiely also missed from the spot for the underdogs.
Limerick were reduced to 10-men when Lee O'Mara's Cup debut ended with a second yellow card after 51 minutes -- but they battled and almost stole it three minutes from the end of normal time, but Kiely's effort was just off target.
Limerick were fortunate after 19 minutes when an effort by Williams went over, but the Dubliners were far more creative as O'Neill had his header superbly saved by Dave Ryan.
Limerick upped the pace in the second half and John Tierney hit a shot that came off the crossbar and Shane Clarke missed the rebound from a few yards. In the final minute, Stephen O'Flynn beat two defenders but his effort flashed across the goal. Ronan Finn then squandered a chance for Fingal three minutes into extra-time.
