Ferdinand to be denied Old Trafford swansong
Rio Ferdinand is poised to miss out on an Old Trafford farewell tonight.
Ryan Giggs is preparing to name himself in the Manchester United squad as he attempts to inspire a positive reaction against Hull City following the defeat against Sunderland on Saturday.
With Wayne Rooney due to be rested to protect the groin strain that forced him out of United's seventh home league defeat of the campaign at the weekend, Robin van Persie could start his first game since sustaining a knee injury against Olympiakos on March 19.
Ferdinand is understood to have been omitted from the United team to accommodate Phil Jones alongside Nemanja Vidic at centre-half, with Rafael da Silva returning at right-back.
With his United contract due to expire next month, Ferdinand is likely to have played his last game at Old Trafford for the club unless he is handed the unexpected offer of a new deal by incoming manager Louis van Gaal.
Giggs, however, could make an appearance that may signal the end of his Old Trafford playing career after admitting that he is considering naming himself in the squad.
"The perfect scenario is me coming on and scoringthe winning goal," said the Welshman.
"Hopefully everyone will be happy, but it doesn't always work like that.
"We'll have to wait and see what happens on the night. I'll have to take that into consideration, but I also want to win the game as manager as well.
