Fans react with dismay to report that Aston Villa want Andy Townsend as Director of Football
Aston Villa want to make former Republic of Ireland captain Andy Townsend their new Director of Football, according to a report in The Sun.
Townsend was a fan favourite during his playing days at Villa park where he made 134 appearances between 1993-97.
It is claimed that Villa chairman Steve Hollis wants to promote familiar faces to the board to restore the unity between the club and its fans.
The Villains will be relegated this year after one of the worst campaigns in the history of the Premier League.
The report claims that Townsend is excited by the role which will see him oversee the playing squad while also making key decisions in regards to selecting a new manager for the upcoming Championship campaign.
The TV pundit still has affiliations with the club and it is hoped that his appointment would be viewed in a positive light by fans but the reaction on social media has been largely negative.
Rumour has it Villa have approached Andy Townsend as a DOF. Let's hope he's as good as that as he was at football and not a pundit #AVFC— Sam Harris (@SamHxrris) April 6, 2016
