Fan's petition to ban Tom Cleverley from World Cup squad gathering pace
A petition created by English supporters to get Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley banned from the World Cup squad has reached 7,500 signatures and counting.
The midfielder has become a scapegoat for both club and country, coming in for stinging criticism in particular for his performances at the heart of the United midfield.
The petition was created by an England supporter Glenn McConnell in Blackpool and is directly petitioning to the FA to veto from travelling to Brazil for the World Cup as he doesn’t possess “any genuine qualities whatsoever”.
“Tom Cleverley, owner of 13 England caps, six more than Ross Barkley, Adam Lallana and Leon Osman combined, has been regularly selected by Roy Hodgson in his squads without possessing any genuine qualities whatsoever,” the petition reads.
“We believe for the reputation of this proud footballing nation that he should be prevented from participating in this summer’s international showcase.
Identifying a fall-guy for a team’s failings is hardly a new phenomenon, though the petition was only created a number of days ago and has gathered momentum.
Presently there are more than 7,500 signatures on the online petition.
