Tottenham were left to reflect on an all-too-familiar feeling of a missed opportunity after Stephan El Shaarawy, the former prodigy of Italian football, denied them a second successive Europa League victory.

Spurs, who opted to play a virtually full-strength team, have only themselves to blame.

Erik Lamela had swung the focus away from another Spurs midfielder, Dele Alli, after the teenager's call-up to the England squad, with a third goal in four games as he continued his renaissance. But they failed to take their chances in the second half and were duly punished nine minutes from time when El Shaarawy equalised.
