REVEALED: Winking Irish mascot’s moment of fame was to honour recently deceased father

Irish football mascot Eoin O’Dwyer became an online sensation following last month and the youngster has revealed that it was for a message for his recently deceased father.

The Mullinahone native captured the public imagination after his wink to the camera as the Boys in Green defeated the world champions 1-0 at the Aviva Stadium.

Many viewers would have been forgiven for thinking it was a light-hearted moment form the football mad fan, but only those close to Eoin realised the significance of the gesture which was revealed in tonight’s match programme for the second-leg play-off match against Bosnia.

Eoin’s father Liam passed away just two weeks before the Germany match and was a proud Ireland and Liverpool supporter who played in goal for Mullinahone FC.

He lost his life after battling a long illness and his son marked the occasion with a special gesture for his dad.
