Spain's triple champions

Spain tonight retained their crown as champions of Europe, to add to their World Cup success in 2010.

Here Independent.ie looks at the players who have been involved in all three triumphs.

IKER CASILLAS

Position: Goalkeeper

Date of birth: 20/05/81

Club: Real Madrid

Euro 2008 games/goals: 5/0.

World Cup 2010 games/goals: 7/0

Euro 2012 games/goals: 6/0.

Central to all three title campaigns, and has missed only one game at the finals in that time - against Greece in 2008. Not fussy or flamboyant but rarely lets Spain down, and captains the team to great effect.

JOSE REINA

Position: Goalkeeper

Date of birth: 31/08/82

Club: Liverpool

Euro 2008 games/goals: 1/0.

World Cup 2010 games/goals: 0/0.

Euro 2012 games/goals: 0/0.

Casillas' understudy in all three finals tournaments, but has had only one chance to step out of his shadow - a 2-1 win over Greece at Euro 2008, when La Roja had already ensured top spot in their first-round group.

RAUL ALBIOL

Date of birth: 04/09/85

Club: Real Madrid

Euro 2008 games/goals: 2/0.

World Cup 2010 games/goals: 0/0.

Euro 2012 games/goals: 0/0.

Like Reina, a bench regular who has not featured in the latter two successes. Fast and capable on the ball, but even an injury to Carles Puyol has not given him an opening to Euro 2012, with Sergio Ramos and Gerard Pique the preferred central partnership.

SERGIO RAMOS

Date of birth: 30/03/86

Club: Real Madrid

Euro 2008 games/goals: 5/0.

World Cup 2010 games/goals: 7/0.

Euro 2012 games/goals: 6/0.

Injury to Puyol has seen the erstwhile right-back move into a central defensive position, but it has not been to the detriment of his game. Questions were raised about the solidity of the Spanish defence early in the competition, but neither France nor Portugal found a way through in the knockout phase and Ramos demonstrated his composure at the other end with a fabulous chipped penalty in the shoot-out win over the Portuguese.

ALVARO ARBELOA

Date of birth: 17/01/83

Club: Real Madrid

Euro 2008 games/goals: 1/0.

World Cup 2010 games/goals: 1/0.

Euro 2012 games/goals: 6/0.

Regular right-back in Poland and Ukraine due to Ramos' switch to the centre. Has been solid, but outshone by rising star Jordi Alba on the opposite flank.

ANDRES INIESTA

Date of birth: 11/05/84

Club: Barcelona

Euro 2008 games/goals: 6/0.

World Cup 2010 games/goals: 6/2.

Euro 2012 games/goals: 6/0.

Not quite at his world-beating best in Euro 2012, but still vital to the Spanish approach and a threat wherever he crops up in the attacking third. Scored the winner against Holland in the 2010 World Cup final.

XAVI

Date of birth: 25/01/80

Club: Barcelona

Euro 2008 games/goals: 5/1.

World Cup 2010 games/goals: 7/0.

Euro 2012 games/goals: 6/0.

The metronome in midfield, rarely cedes possession and is entirely central to Spain's tactics. Scored in the Euro 2008 semi-final win over Russia.

CESC FABREGAS

Date of birth: 04/05/87

Club: Barcelona

Euro 2008 games/goals: 6/1.

World Cup 2010 games/goals: 4/0.

Euro 2012 games/goals: 6/2.

Did not start a match in the World Cup, but set up Iniesta for the only goal in the final. Converted the winning spot-kick in the quarter-final victory over Italy at Euro 2008 and has often been the furthest advanced in Vicente Del Bosque's occasional striker-free line-ups at Euro 2012.

XABI ALONSO

Date of birth: 25/11/81

Club: Real Madrid

Euro 2008 games/goals: 4/0.

World Cup 2010 games/goals: 7/0.

Euro 2012 games/goals: 6/2.

Superb range of passing and a goal threat from almost anywhere on the pitch, Alonso is a key part of the Spanish midfield.

FERNANDO TORRES

Date of birth: 20/03/84

Club: Chelsea

Euro 2008 games/goals: 5/2.

World Cup 2010 games/goals: 6/0.

Euro 2012 games/goals: 5/3.

The matchwinner in the Euro 2008 final, Torres has struggled since leaving Liverpool for Chelsea but looked back to his best in Poland and Ukraine, his three goals earning him the golden boot.

DAVID SILVA

Date of birth: 08/01/86

Club: Manchester City

Euro 2008 games/goals: 5/1.

World Cup 2010 games/goals: 2/0.

Euro 2012 games/goals: 6/2.

Has worked his way back into favour after seemingly carrying the can for Spain's opening defeat to Switzerland in the South Africa World Cup, although his displays at Euro 2012 have not matched some of the sparkling performances he put in for City last season.
