When Martin O’Neill took the Ireland job last November he suggested that it would be a short honeymoon - September could be the month that will dictate if this perfect match will be one that will last.

The Dream Team of O’Neill and Roy Keane is still very much in its infancy with results so far not setting the world alight.

The optimism among Ireland fans has not been helped by O’Neill declaring that the lack of young talent at his disposal was limited and the confirmation that Jack Grealish is considering jumping ship to England.

O’Neill has played it with a safe bat in naming his first competitive squad for the September 7 clash away to Georgia.

Robbie Keane is still Ireland’s best finisher and will get goals, particularly against the so-called weaker countries. While I would start Shane Long against the stronger nations, Keane gets the nod for the Georgia game.

Left full has been a problem position for the Boys In Green with Stephen Ward not up to scratch but Marc Wilson is capable of doing a job there with Ciaran Clark slotting in at centre half to replace the retired Richard Dunne.

Darron Gibson should partner James McCarthy in the middle of the park but his lack of match action will relegate him to the bench in Tblisi, while this match may come too soon for impressive youngster Jeff Hendrick.

Here, sports editor of Independent.ie Ger Keville and soccer correspondent Dan McDonnell name who they think should start on September 7.
