The Republic of Ireland secured a battling 1-1 draw in the first leg of their Euro 2016 play-off against Bosnia and Herzegovina and while it was tough to see the action through the fog in Zenica, here is how we rated the Irish heroes.

Darren Randolph - The Ireland keeper had little to do for long periods, but he looked tidy in his work when the Bosnian's managed to test him. He looks to be a solid option to fill the goal as a successor for Shay Given needs to be found - 7

Seamus Coleman - A solid display from the Everton man, but he was unable to get Ireland onto the front foot with his trademark runs forward. Hopefully that aspect of his game will be more in evidence at the Aviva Stadium for the second leg on Monday - 7

Ciaran Clark - His commitment to the cause could not be questioned and he was helped by a lacklustre attacking display by Edin Dzeko and his comrades. John O'Shea's experience may still be a better option - 7

Richard Keogh - Oozing with pride and passion as fought to keep Ireland's clean sheet intact, Keogh clearly lacks a touch of class and yet he makes up for it with his drive to battle for the Irish cause - 8

Stephen Ward - A weak link in the Ireland defence and it was not surprising given his lack of club football this season. Ward was attacked by Bosnia and he was not helped by the lack of defensive support from Robbie Brady in front of him - 5

James McCarthy - It was hard for McCarthy to shine on a night when Ireland were focused on containing their opponents and the Everton man did his job in the heart of the midfield battle - 7

Jeff Hendrick - A half chance in the 53rd minute fell Hendrick's way, but he planted his header onto the roof of the Bosnian net. He was not effective enough as an attacking force - 6

Glenn Whelan - The occasional wayward pass would have been noted his his vocal critics, but Whelan was charged with disrupting the Bosnia midfield creators and he succeeded in his task - 7

Wes Hoolahan - Picked in an away match at last, but Hoolahan failed to justify the selection as he could not get enough of the ball to make an impact. He was replaced after 59 minutes - 5

Robbie Brady - Poor distribution from set pieces as been a flaw in Brady's make-up throughout the Euro 2016 qualifying campaign and he struggled again in Bosnia, but he did produce the moment of magic we needed to secure the vital away goal - 7

Daryl Murphy - Faced with a tough task as he was asked to lead the Ireland line alone, the lack of service that came his way meant he could not be faulted for his lack of involvement - 6
