EXCLUSIVE: Kevin Doyle back in full training with Colorado Rapids
Kevin Doyle has returned to full training with Colorado Rapids and has told Independent.ie that he will do all he can to win a place in the Republic of Ireland’s Euro 2016 squad.
Doyle has made a rapid recovery following the horrific leg gash he sustained in Ireland’s friendly international against Switzerland on March 25th at the Aviva Stadium, with a gory image of the injury becoming a viral social media hit after it appeared on his Twitter account.
After plastic surgeons helped to patch up the leg in Dublin before he returned to Colorado, Doyle is keen to prove his fitness before Martin O’Neill names his Ireland squad for this summer’s finals in France.
“I am back in full training and want to try and score a few goals between now and the squad being finalised for the Euros,” Doyle told Independent.ie.
“It was so disappointing to only play for a few minutes against Switzerland last month as I knew it was a big chance for me to push for a place in the squad, but hopefully I still have a chance.
“The leg is looking fine now and there is no discomfort at all. We have made a little cast to cover it up in case I get another hit on it when I get back onto to the field and there is a possibility that I will play some part in our game this weekend.”
Doyle is battling it out for one of the last places up for grabs in O’Neill’s Euro 2016 squad, with Shane Long, Jonathan Walters and Robbie Keane seemingly assured of their places, leaving at least one striking berth still up for grabs.
