It didn't happen exactly as Cristiano Ronaldo would have dreamed, but the Real Madrid star still ended up lifting the Henri Delaunay trophy after Portugal beat France 1-0 to win Euro 2016.
Most people would have expected Ronaldo to grab the winner in any Portugal victory but an early knee injury forced the tearful attacker off the pitch in the first half.
He made himself useful in other ways as he barked instructions from the touchline like a manager and encouraged his team-mates ahead of the crucial extra time period. By winning a big international trophy, Ronaldo has now collected almost every accolade in a career that started to blossom when he joined Manchester United in 2003.
The striker credits former United boss Alex Ferguson with helping him develop into the devastating attacker he now is, and Ronaldo got to share his moment of victory with the legendary manager at the Stade de France this evening.
Ferguson was in attendance at tonight's game and met Ronaldo for an embrace at the final whistle in what was a truly touching moment.
