The man who was the target of an hilarious set of Euro 2016 flags has vowed to get back at his pals.

Tom Fitzgibbon's pals Daniel Hegarty, Darren McNamara and Aaron Ryan made up a set of flags with his face on it which read: "This is Tom. He isn't here cas [sic] he got a new gf."

Underneath it says: "Don't be like Tom.”

They made a second tricolour featuring his girlfriend Emma O'Leary's picture with the accompanying words: “There she is. Err...we would too.”

Pictures and videos of the flags were posted on Independent.ie on Saturday night and they quickly went viral.

And today, Tom, from Buttevant revealed how he only learned of the flags after someone tagged him to our story on Facebook.

“Someone had tagged me and I couldn't believe it. With friends like that who needs enemies.”

Tom (27) disputed the claims that he bailed on his friends by not going to Euro 2016 in Paris.

He said: “The boys were just looking to take the p**s. I was never going to the Euros, I have no real interest in soccer, more of a rugby man.

“I haven't been talking to them yet but I'll have my revenge.”

Asked what he had in mind to get back at the trio, Tom fell short: “I haven't thought of what I am going to do yet but I'll think of something.”

He explained that he did indeed start seeing his girlfriend Emma from Cork city recently. “That's the only part of the story that is true.

“She was a bit taken aback at the start but she took it all in good spirits in the end.”
