A header from Ricardo Quaresma deep into extra time snatched a dramatic win for Portugal in a game that failed to live up to expectations.

Croatia had impressed massively in beating Spain 2-1 to win Group D but despite welcoming Luka Modric back into the side, they couldn't recapture their round one form.

Normal time was a massive disappointment, with neither side registering a shot on target, which lead to an additional period.

Extra time was a bit more lively, with Ivan Perisic having Croatia's best chance, but the match winner against Spain could only hit the post in the game's dying moments.

The miss immediately proved costly, with Nani working the ball to Cristiano Ronaldo to the right of goal at the other end. The Real Madrid striker's shot was saved, but the rebound fell kindly for replacement Ricardo Quaresma to head home.

Croatia piled the pressure on in pursuit of an equaliser, but Portugal held on to book a quarter-final date with Poland.
