Croatia captain Darijo Srna has returned home from the European Championships after his father passed away during the team's 1-0 win over Turkey yesterday.

Srna performed well in Croatia's first group game, striking the crossbar with a free kick, but his joy at victory quickly turned to despair after he was informed of his father's death after the final whistle.

According to the Daily Mirror, Srna will miss Friday's game against Czech Republic and it isn't yet known whether the skipper will return for the group finale against Spain.

"The Croatian Football Federation hereby expresses its condolences to the captain and his family for this irreparable loss," the Croatian FA said in a statement.

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric gave his county three priceless points after volleying home a spectacular winner late in the first half against Turkey.
