Friends of Kane Leslie appealed on Twitter to anyone who had seen him in Nice to contact them.

Mr Leslie had not been seen since Sunday afternoon, and had been heading to a beach.

He is understood to have missed the first Northern Ireland match of the tournament against Poland.

Among those who retweeted the appeal was Calum Best, son of the football legend, George Best, and radio DJ and soccer pundit Colin Murray.

On Tuesday afternoon his friend Steve Hudson who launched the appeal gave an update to say that Kane had been in contact.

Kane posted a message to his friends on Facebook from an internet cafe in Nice to say he is safe and well and had been robbed of his wallet and phone.

Steve told the Belfast Telegraph: "Apparently he had been set upon, and has his wallet stolen and managed to make his way to an internet cafe in Nice and put a message out on Facebook to safe he is safe."

Kane will make his journey home on Wednesday.

Steve added: "We are really happy, just delighted. I spoke to him earlier, he still a little bit shellshocked. He hasn't gone through the details.

"But his words were that he got set upon at some point and lost his wallet and his phone and any money he had.

"I spoke to him and he is heading home.

"We are just glad to hear form him that he's safe and sound."

Steve thanked all those who shared the appeal.

He said: "It's unbelievable and we are so grateful to everyone who shared it. People from all sorts of communities shared it, it wasn't just Northern Ireland fans.

"And we got lots of calls and information, we were really impressed with the way it was done - so thank you to everybody."
