A first-half goal from Wout Weghorst sent Dundalk to a 1-0 Europa League defeat to AZ Alkmaar at Tallaght Stadium.
Weghorst struck the only goal with nine minutes on the clock, but Dundalk remain in with a chance of qualification.
If they beat Maccabi Tel Aviv in their final group game and AZ do not beat Zenit, they will progress.
The home side were thoroughly outclassed in the opening exchanges as AZ piled on the pressure, which eventually resulted in Weghorst firing home from close range after Dundalk failed to deal with a second ball following a corner.
In fairness to Stephen Kenny's men, they grew into the game thereafter although they never really carved out a clear-cut opportunity.
They continued to press in the second half although the game would have been beyond them had Gary Rogers not pulled off four impressive saves.
Dundalk couldn't find the equaliser they needed and now travel to Israel knowing that even a win might not be enough to book them a place in the knockout stages.
