Downing sends Villans through

Aston Villa 2
Burnley 1
(after extra-time)

stewart Downing fired 10-man Aston Villa in to the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup following extra-time at Villa Park last night.

Substitute Emile Heskey thought he had sent Villa through when he finished an Ashley Young cross in the 86th minute -- but Clarke Carlisle had other ideas. The Burnley defender grabbed a last-minute equaliser to send the game into extra-time.

Villa dominated in terms of possession despite not fielding a recognised striker. Burnley enjoyed good spells but without really threatening Brad Friedel's goal as the sides went in level at the break.

Heskey arrived just before the hour mark, replacing Stephen Ireland, but Villa then needed a double save from Friedel to keep them on level terms.

First he tipped away a shot from Martin Patterson and then reacted to keep out the rebound from Jay Rodriguez.

The Villa 'keeper also had to be alert to turn over a looping header from Rodriguez before Heskey and Carlisle traded late strikes to take the game into extra-time.

Downing's 96th-minute winner was followed quickly by a straight red card for Marc Albrighton.
