Vincent Kompany has become a hero in the blue half of Manchester but was a major transfer target of Alex Ferguson according to a document printed in his latest autobiography.
The document, headed 'Player Analysis' outlines the squad composition from 2004 and includes a list of four 'transfer possibilities'.
Among the names listed are Gabriel Heinze, Philippe Mexes, Gerard Pique and Manchester City's Vincent Kompany.
Heinze and Pique did eventually join the Old Trafford club but Kompany joined Bundesliga side Hamburg before moving to City in 2008.
One of the players listed under 'Youth Potential' was Republic of Ireland international Paul McShane who was at the club at the time.
