Coventry City suspends Irish footballer over 'up IRA' tweet
IRISH footballer Gary Deegan has been suspended by his club Coventry City following "up the IRA" comments he posted on Twitter three weeks ago.
The Dubliner directed the comments at Scottish-born Sky Blues team-mate James McPake, who had just been called into the Northern Ireland squad.
The midfielder (24) insists his comments were a joke.
A statement from the club said: "Coventry City confirm that Gary Deegan has been suspended from training for a period of two weeks whilst further investigations take place into comments on Twitter social networking site. Neither the player nor the club will be making any further statement whilst internal investigations are ongoing."
Mr Deegan joined City from Bohemians in January 2010 and claims his comments were just banter.
He followed the offensive tweet with the following comment: "Everybody calm down. I apologise if I offended anybody -- was just taking the p***.
"No matter where you go in the world Irish people are loved #bestcountryintheworld. Proud to be an Irish man."
