Controversial McMillan strike keeps Students on front foot

Saturday October 03 2009

SHELBOURNE and UCD remain locked together at the top of the First Division after a pulsating clash at Tolka Park last night.

Two goals by David McAllister should have wrapped up the three points for the Reds but the Students equalised twice, first through Brian Shorthall -- later dismissed -- and then McMillan.

Shels took the lead on eight minutes when McAllister turned the ball home after David Cassidy had helped the ball back into the area after a poorly-cleared corner.

The Students equalised in the 17th minute when a Paul Corry corner fell to McMillan and he set up Shorthall to score.

Shels regained the lead in the 34th minute. UCD 'keeper Ger Barron spilled Michael Synnott's corner and McAllister fired the loose ball to the net.

UCD were reduced to 10 men in the 63rd minute when Shorthall was dismissed following a clash with Cassidy.

The Students struck a controversial equaliser in the 74th minute when Chris Mulhall robbed Anthony Flood and, as Shels claimed a free, Mulhall found McMillan, who beat the 'keeper.
