David Lodola grabbed a fortunate opener for the Gypsies, but Shels were the better team and a second-half brace from Barry Clancy helped them earn the bragging rights despite the best efforts of Robert Bayly.

Sligo Rovers put paid to Cockhill Celtic's dreams with a 4-0 win in Buncrana.

Paul Cook fielded a strong team and Joseph Ndo and Raffaele Cretaro bagged a goal apiece.

An Alex Lee strike two minutes into injury-time was too little too late for Mervue as Derry City beat them 2-1 thanks to goals from David McDaid (penalty) and Michael McCrudden.

Roddy Collins' Monaghan United overturned Dundalk's first-half lead in Gortakeegan to book their place in the quarter-finals. Philip Byrne cancelled out Keith Ward's 21st-minute free-kick opener when he headed home with 10 minutes remaining and then former Lilywhite Declan O'Brien struck for the winner nine minutes into extra-time.
